The physical and mechanical properties of viscose largely depend on the way a fibre is shaped. The fabric can be glossy or matt, lightweight or heavy, textured or smooth. 100 % viscose looks similar to silk - it is semitransparent and glossy. To reduce the natural gloss, special matting chemicals are applied.
Viscose has a myriad of brilliant qualities, which makes it a popular fibre to work with. Thanks to its characteristics, several industries use it, to create a wide range of products. Some of the most beneficial characteristics of viscose fabric include:
- Versatile - it blends very well with other fibres
- Breathable
- Warm in winter and cool in summer
- Drapes well
- Easily dyeable and excellent colour retention
- The dyeing technology allows for maximum colour penetration into the fibres
- If correctly dyed, it doesn’t fade in the sun
- Highly absorbent
- Very smooth
- Does not trap body heat
- Relatively light, lighter than cotton
- Strong and robust
- Soft and comfortable
- Inexpensive
- No static build up (antistatic)
- It absorbs twice more moisture than cotton
- Highly durable when dry
- Good at retaining body heat
- Needs no special recycling
- Non-allergenic
- Hygienic
These all sound great, but there are some slightly less positive traits to viscose. However, none of these are particularly negative. A little care during wearing and washing, will make these traits obsolete. There are fewer cons than pros, however, you should take them all into account:
- It can shrink when washed
- This fabric is prone to wrinkling
- Deteriorates with exposure to light
- Susceptible to mildew
- Fibres can weaken when wet
- It may shrink in size and deform during the washing process
- Susceptible to mildew
- It wears out affected by water, high temperature or ultraviolet radiation, especially if these factors affect simultaneously. That is why these fabrics are often infused with chemical antioxidants and filters protecting viscose fibres from ultraviolet as early as on the production stage.
1 yorum:
It is known to have a consistent shape and will not loosen up due to frequent use. This means the viscose fabric has no elasticity but it can be blended well along with other woven textiles.
